It’s easy to feel stupid around technology. I know I do. Some people fear technology so much that the fear actually blocks them from benefiting from a more productive and easier life. Fear tries to make us avoid the thing we fear. Which is all very well if what we fear is bad for us. But fearing technology only harms us.

Out of your technology comfort zone?

It can be daunting to be presented with a new cell phone, or a new computer, or a new software package to learn. You might have a ‘comfort zone’ of technology you feel ok with using. Stepping outside that comfort zone can feel scary, but getting in the habit of relaxing with new technology brings you real advantages.

People who thrive in life tend to be those who adopt new and better strategies as quickly as possible. These people adapt and develop more quickly. They don’t get left behind. To be an ‘early adapter’ you don’t need to be a techie, but you do need vision and the confidence to see where the new technology will fit in your life and start using it. If something really is too complicated to use, then it hasn’t been designed properly anyway and shouldn’t be on the market.

Understanding technology only up to a point

It’s also important to draw the distinction between fully understanding how something works and being able to use it. I don’t have much understanding of exactly how my car works, but I know how to drive it. Likewise, I couldn’t really explain to you the intricate workings of a TV set, DVD player, or dishwasher, but I know how to work these pieces of technology and that serves me well enough!

The greatest piece of technology in the known universe is, of course, inside your skull. No other technology even comes close. Hypnosis is a perfect way to update attitudes and overcome fears. I’m looking forward to feedback on this one. And not in my snail mail!

When I first started up in business as a hypnotherapist I naively thought the world would soon hear of me and beat a path to my door. I felt awkward about recommending my services, even though I was having quite dramatic positive results with people suffering from conditions which many other practitioners had failed to help. But I needed more people to come and see me or I would have to find another job! Fortunately, I realized that I had the tools to help myself!

You may have got into the habit of laughing nervously at the end of sentences even when you are really trying to communicate something serious.

Don’t get me wrong – laughter is wonderful and having a great sense of humor is a great asset. But nervous laughter is not about humor it is about nervousness.

So (I hear you giggle nervously), what is the difference between normal social humorous laughter and nervous laughter?

When you will hear nervous laughter 

Nervous laughter happens during episodes of embarrassment and happens because of this embarrassment, alarm or confusion rather than from genuine amusement. Nervous giggling is your body’s response to feelings of anxiety. It tends to come from the throat and, rather than relaxing you like humorous laughter, it tends to intensify feelings of self-consciousness and anxiety. 

Nervous giggles are usually inappropriate 

Laughing or giggling nervously will generally appear out of place in the situation where they occur. Because it happens when you feel uncomfortable, tense or anxious, it will often seem inappropriate to other people. If everyone is laughing then that’s fine, of course, but if it is just you, and occurring ‘out of context,’ then it can undermine your personal authority as an individual who can be both serious and confident. 

What nervous laughter says about you 

Nervous laughing sends a signal that you do not take issues seriously, or that what you have to say isn’t important or serious. Laughter tagged on to the end of your sentences when you have not been making a joke essentially conveys the message that ‘what I have just said is not serious so you can forget it…’ 

Nervous laughter in response to others when they were being quite serious also indicates that the laughter comes from nerves rather than amusement. (Although of course some people can seem funny to us when they are being serious – but there is still a distinction between nervous laughter and genuine amusement).

Imagine a newsreader laughing nervously as they read you the news, or a doctor giving a serious diagnosis while laughing and giggling. It’s just all wrong!

Nervous laughter can just become a habit 

If people often feel under confident or overly tense during interactions with others, in social or work situations, nervous laughing can easily become a habitual response.

Admit it, we like to judge people or situations instantly.Why? Because going by appearances means we don’t have to go to all the bother of ‘looking deeper’.

But there is a price to pay for failing to look beyond skin deep.

Appearances are a trap

A pretty or handsome face and a charming personality are certainly attractive and may be compelling - but what if they are a disguise? Did you know that good looking people are less likely to be convicted in a court of law? (1).

We live in a youth and looks obsessed world that idolizes surface personality. Buying into this world of surface glitter compromises our sense of reality – our own reality included.

When we meet someone new or a new situation it’s easy to assume that the little bit we see can really tell us something about the whole of that person or situation. A moment’s thought tells us this must be nonsense – but we still do it. Sometimes first impression or appearances can give us clues, of course, but if we rely solely on appearances were are unlikely to be able to understand situations properly, or really get to know people.

(1) The researchers at Bath Spa University came to their conclusions after asking 96 volunteers to read a transcript of a fictitious mugging case.

Half of the participants were given a picture of an attractive suspect, the others one of a supposedly ugly defendant. The script was the same in either case. The volunteer ‘jurors’ were then asked to decide whether the suspect was innocent or guilty. In the latter case they also had to decide on a sentence.

Analysis of the results revealed that attractive suspects were more likely to be acquitted, despite there being no extra evidence in their favor.

Sandie Taylor, the psychologist who conducted the study, said: “We set out to consider the influence of physical attractiveness and ethnicity of a defendant depicted in a photograph on mock jurors’ decisions of verdict, extent of guilt and sentencing.

“Our findings confirm previous research on the effects of defendant characteristics - such as physical attractiveness - on the deliberations of jurors.

“Attractive defendants are, it seems, rated less harshly than homely defendants, so perhaps justice isn’t blind after all.

“People who are physically attractive are assumed to be clever, successful and have more friends - it is tragic in a way.”

Who was it that said: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”? And while I’m quoting people smarter than me, I believe it was Aristotle (the philosopher, not the shipping magnate ☺) who said: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Training the brain and body takes repetition, and the more repetition the better. This doesn’t apply to everything in life, of course, and you can over do some things. For example, weight training the same body parts every day isn’t a good idea, as the rest day is an important part of the overall training. But when you are learning something new, or focusing on achieving and completing a goal, then doing a bit every day and not trying to cram it all in is a wonderful habit to acquire.

But why don’t we find it easier to practice or work on something daily?

Well, the initial excitement and sense of self-righteousness that carries you along can all too easily give way to boredom, or even resentment that you ‘have to’ learn Spanish, do your exercises, or whatever.

So for the first few days you feel really motivated, but then you skip the fifth day, and ‘try’ on the sixth day, and then after that you just kind of forget about it – it’s all too much hassle. It’s as if you consciously know you ‘should’ do it, but you just don’t feel like it anymore. That initial excitement about getting fit or mastering something new has passed. Feeling irritable is unpleasant for the person who is irritated and acting irritable is unpleasant… well, for everyone. Some people wind you up, of course, but sometimes you just know that you are over-reacting by snapping at them or ‘jumping down their throats’. Being annoyed once in a while isn’t a problem, but being regularly irritable is bad for your health and your relationships.

So what causes chronic irritability?

The over-flowing stress bucket

Imagine a bucket of water that you have to carry round with you. If it is always full then you’ll find it starts to spill out at the smallest trip or step you make. But if you empty it often and only carry around a small amount of liquid in your bucket then you’ll find it takes a lot more to upset the water and make it spill over. And, you guessed it, this is a neat parallel for stress.

If you are highly stressed and don’t regularly empty your ‘stress bucket’ by relaxing, eating right, sleeping well, etc. then you’ll find the slightest thing will jolt you - making that irritable, stressed, even angry response flood out.

Irritability and not getting needs met

Irritability can be a signal that your basic human needs are not being met. If you don’t take sufficient care of your physical and emotional needs, you simply won’t have enough ‘spare capacity’ to cope with the constant annoyances of life.

But if you are rested, acknowledged, safe, stimulated, stretched, and connected you’ll find it much easier to sail through life.

This is why it’s useful to identify what changes in your life could generally lift your mood.

Irritation and anger

Irritability is really low level or suppressed anger. Learning to be more tolerant on the one hand and more calmly assertive on the other can really help ease away irritability. You can complain about poor service in a restaurant, for example, without activating your stress response and raising your blood pressure!
