Once upon a time, people’s choice of job was fairly limited. Most people would help with the family business, work in the local factory or perhaps become an apprentice. For the small number who were rich and educated, the options still tended to be rather limited – perhaps a doctor, a lawyer, or simply taking care of the family’s estate.

These days the choices open to you can be quite overwhelming. A person might work from home, do contract work, be an entertainer, have multiple careers, start their own business, write for a living, teach – in fact, the list of possible careers is almost endless.

This means on the one hand that it requires more effort and time to choose where to head in your life, but on the other hand, it means you have more opportunities open to you than you would have had in any other point in human history.
