I think women – and moms in particular – are increasingly pressured by society through the media to be everything to everyone. If the tabloids are to be believed, to be a successful mother you must:

Mums are told they can ‘have it all’ if they just try hard enough and people talk about motherhood as if it isn’t a full time job or a proper vocation.

Since, of course, ideals are never lived up to, many mums can carry around a lot of guilt: “Are my kids happy? Is it because of me if they’re not? I must be an awful mum because, sometimes, I lose my temper with them!”
