This is a big issue for many people: the feeling that you are ‘destined’ to be a certain way because of your parent or parents. People even talk of ‘becoming my parent!’
You may look like them. You may sound like them. And of course, as we grow older, we can sometimes almost see our parents in our own reflections in the mirror. But heredity is not destiny.

People often assume that because their parents were depressed, ill, poor, unlucky or whatever, they, too, must inevitably be so. Parents can condition (or try to condition) their children by repeatedly giving them destructive and false messages such as: ‘You’ll never amount to much!’ ‘You’ll always be lonely!’ ‘Who would want you?’’ and so forth. Some of this may stick, and start to feel like inescapable truth. Which, of course, it’s not. Furthermore, other people’s comments, particularly things like ‘You are just like your father/mother!’ may add to the sense that your destiny will mirror that of your parents. Or maybe there’s just a lot to live up to.

Some people feel they live in their parent’s shadow. Maybe a parent was extremely charming, clever or successful in the world and you feel there is a great deal of expectation (explicit or implicit) or that somehow you should go into a similar career, or be a certain way, just because a parent was like this. But the only true success is to become what is right for you as a unique person.
