Men are taught from an early age to equate sexual prowess with status and masculinity. Of course, fear of sexual failure can actually bring about what is feared. If you are stressing that you will not be able to ‘perform sexually’, the worry itself can switch off sexual arousal. To have sex we need to be aroused, but anxiety arousal can drive out sexual arousal.
A man’s (and a woman’s, of course) sexual response is meant to switch off during anxiety and stress. During human history, if we had been threatened by, say, a lion entering the cave, imagine if we had continued to be sexually aroused while fighting for our lives!. Anxiety switches off sexual desire and capacity, and rightly so. But when the anxiety is inappropriate because there is no actual physical threat (the threat only coming from inside one’s own mind) then sexual performance anxiety becomes a problem.

The more you feel a certain way within a situation, the more likely you are to feel that way in future. Why? Because the brain learns though association and expectation. This starts to happen in exactly the same way as listening to a certain piece of music, for example, can start to make you feel a certain way – your brain has learned to feel a certain way in response to a given situation through repetition.
