To love someone, despite their ‘imperfections’. Mmmm… I wouldn’t want to come across as overly poetic, but I’m reminded of a poem by Yeats (okay, I had to look it up to remind myself! ☺)
The poem, ‘When you are old’ talks about his love for a woman and how others had loved her when she’d been youthful or merely for her beauty but he had loved her seeming imperfections as well, with a love more complete:
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face…
Perfectionism, as applied to other people, rots relationships. Often the perfectionist will at first feel that someone is perfect in every way, but then feel let down when the fantasy they created bumps up against the reality of the person they’ve fallen for. Of course, someone has to ‘be right’ for us. We have to click, but to love someone ‘in the round’ we need to look beyond irritations.
Love your imperfect partner because they are human
A true art lover or appreciator of any kind will love and value something not just despite but also because of its imperfections, quirks and oddities. ‘There are better painted paintings, and I don’t know why but I just like this one!’ Discovering your loved one has feet of clay doesn’t mean you can’t love those feet.
It’s as if we can all open ourselves up to the profound experience of being able to discern the inner value of something – not just surface stuff.
We have all had the experience of meeting somebody who, on paper, ‘ticked all the right boxes’ – beautiful, or handsome, or says all the right things – but for some reason the magic spark just isn’t there. And sometimes, there is just that magic something with people who seem less attractive superficially but there’s just something about them: what the French call the ‘je ne sais quoi’. But then the French have a word for everything ☺
