The problem with some sales people is that they try too hard. Not meaning to sound pompous, but the ‘Zen’ of great selling is to sell without selling. Selling something to someone should be the by product of communicating with them. So many sales people talk, attempting to demonstrate their ‘charisma’, but the really super sales people know that listening is the key; especially at first.

Actually, having seen some 3,000 troubled souls in my capacity as a psychotherapist/hypnotherapist, I’m quite fascinated by the psychology of selling. Why? Because a psychotherapist is always ‘closing’ – always ‘selling’. We do that subtly, sometimes imperceptibly. We, like the sales person, have to listen, gather information fast, build rapport, set goals and discover what the client really needs, as well as what they say they want.

A good psychotherapist will know how to fascinate and present new ideas, they’ll know how to feed back, when to listen and when to talk. We have to sell calm to the phobic, optimism to the depressed pessimist, restraint and self control to the addict. I guarantee you other psychotherapists – if they are a bit precious about what they do – won’t like this comparison, but it stands up well, I think. The great superstars of sales give before they take anything. And they give the most precious thing, the thing most people don’t get enough of in their lives: quality attention. Relaxing, being positive, really connecting with the person in front of you and working together to find the best possible solution is the essence of great selling. So the sales person needs to be: a confidante, a friend (genuinely) and a story teller. Selling to someone is first and foremost about building a relationship.
