I used to get really embarrassed when conversation flagged. It can seem so much more comfortable to ‘fill all the spaces’ with chatter and it is true that some people are a lot more easy to relax with than others! You can have comfortable relaxed moments of non-chat with some people while with others it can feel like torture. But some people find any lapse in conversation highly awkward and stressful. They have a permanent attitude of: ‘Oh no… what if we run out of conversation!’
Silence is part of communication
Verbal silence gives body language a chance, allows for information to settle, lets people think about what they truly want to say and gives an opportunity for others to speak. But none of this is possible if silence makes you anxious, because fear can drive out all the possible benefits of being silent with another person.
Social anxiety makes people worry about what they’ll have to talk about, and the fear of not having things to say can feel overwhelming. But all good music has gaps in the right places, blocks of words have spaces between those words and paragraphs. It is these spaces which help to make the wider pattern of communication possible.
Relaxing with silence makes for much more powerful communication and all great speakers know how to use silence (and there is quite a difference between pausing and hesitating) to great effect.
Comfortable Silence the new session for hypnosisdownloads.com seeks to encourage the capacity to truly relax with conversational silences.
All the best
